Workshops: Ages: 7 – 10 (Years 3 – 6)
Are you a budding filmmaker? Want to flex your creative skills? Want to build your technical knowhow or maybe do some acting for screen?
Well, we've got a summer film making club that you just won't want to miss!
Aims of the workshop
The workshop allows participants to experience key skills such as:
- being a camera-operator and learn how to compose a frame
- recording live sound, source FX and music (or even compose some!)
- being part of an animation team, using digital and hand-drawn imagery…
- creating the perfect lighting states to capture all the action,
- being a producer and marking-up a bespoke screenplay
- sorting and sourcing costumes
- being a continuity officer and clapping the clapperboard!
- being part of a team that films all the behind-the-scenes silliness and nonsense
- learning how to edit using Final Cut Pro X
- or showing off your acting skills - small/medium/large roles available!

Workshop Overview
These are just some of the skills that pupils will learn over the workshop:
Use a Camera
Whether it be a Canon XA30, Fujifilm X-T3, or even an iPhone 13 Max Pro, we've got you covered. We've got some neat lenses too!
Film Editing
Learn how to use Da Vinci, or even the Rolls Royce of editing, Final Cut Pro
Sound Engineer
Get to know your boom pole from your Tascam, your DMX cable from your furry cat microphone
Props/Costume Manager
Make decisions on wellies to waistcoats, and bikes to board games in order to create the right mood for the character and action
Acting
Learn all about proxemics, projection, pronunciation, timing, focus and empathy, as we guide you the process of acting for screen
Creating Animations
Whether you are a fan of digital apps like Blender or good old-fashioned stop-frame (always our favourite!) you'll be right at home with us
Workshop Content
Over the course of the week, we will be learning, planning and creating:
Monday:
- learn about camera angles, shot sizes, composition of frame, sound, music, effects, editing, and the importance of mise-en-scene and how it tells a story
- nominate some camera ops for The Making Of…(and start filming!)
- plan and create the Mannequin Challenge
- students then independently plan, film and edit their own First Day Film
- read through the screenplay, audition for a range of acting roles
- assign technical roles and brief students on their work for the week
- mark-up scenes from the screenplay, ready for filming
- hold a production meeting to decide on sourcing props and costume
- plan the production week in its entirety!
Tuesday:
- Film, film, film…
Wednesday:
- Film, film, film…and edit, edit, edit!
Thursday:
- Film, film, film…and edit, edit, edit!
Friday:
- Film, film, film…review, review, review and edit, edit, edit!
Then have a well-earned WRAP party (with food and refreshments)
Film premiere
A few months later…we hold a premiere, where we:
- welcome everyone (including parents/friends/family)
- show the coolective Mannequin Challenge
- show the small-group First Day Films
- show the trailer for the main feature
- show the main feature (about 30-40 minutes in length)
- award everyone a certificate that records their production skill(s)
- award everyone an engraved trophy for recording their participation
- award some a special award certificate, if nominated by their peers
- award some a special award trophy, if nominated by their peers
- have even more fun and celebrate the immense work that we have achieved!
